Suicide law

Today, I learned Singapore has a law criminalizing suicide.

If my understanding of Sociological Imagination is correct, that means there is a deeper societal problem. If suicide is done by one person, it is an individual’s problem. If multiple people commit suicide, it may be a societal problem.

The law’s intentions are noble. But when a person is in a fragile state like this, isn’t arrest and imprisonment adding insult to injury? Suicide may be called as a foolish choice by some people, but recognize their position of despair and desparation. From their perspective, there is no way out, therefore the only viable option they see is to be no more.

Additional reading with Durkheim’s Suicide may be a good starter.
